Brain Drain

Brain Drain
The Mere Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity

Limited Capacity Attentional Resources
Let’s Define
A limited space our brains have for concentration–which, when used for a given cognitive process or task, make fewer available for other tasks

Let’s Define
Automatic Attention Response
An automatic system in our brain that unconsciously monitors sounds and signal that alert us to issues of critical importance

Attention is Limited
The presence of a cellphone triggers the same automatic attention response as hearing someone shouting, a loud noise, sirens, or a baby crying

The Problem
The sole presence of an individual’s cellphone has a significant impact on the amount of information our brain can access and retain

The Solution
It’s simple, keep your phone at a distance for stronger cognitive capacity.
“Sometimes when I’m doing homework, I’ll just put my phone away from me, so I can’t even check it. I think that’s helpful because even if there’s notifications or anything, I silence them, so it’s just out of the way. I just put it on the charger because I’m more productive when I put it to the side.”
